Dead poet society: Worth the watch?
Spoilers ahead!
Dead Poets Society is a beautiful comedy drama about a group of boys in school who join friendship and love. It follows the school life of Todd Anderson, Niel Perry, Knox Overstreet, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks, Gerald Pitts and Charlie Dalton. Mr. Keating, a new teacher at an all-boys school, uses strange and unusual teaching methods to help the young boys to escape the high standards of their school, parents and to blossom and crack out of their shell.
This film immediately had me hooked. From its nostalgic autumn fuzzy feeling to its remarkable authenticity and its relatable characters. Todd Anderson is quiet, introverted and has a thirst for literature is who I relate to most. Niel Perry too, with his passion for the preforming arts, to act in front of a sea of gazing faces while you feel that overwhelming sense of true belonging. Mr Keating, who is one of the most perfect characters, helps Todd to find his voice and be able to express it through poetry.
This movie really choked me as its message is extremely clear and powerful. From watching this film, I learnt to follow my dreams even if people think they are pathetic or unrealistic. The passion of a subject or art is more formidable than money gain and if it’s something you cannot live without doing pursue that and live to your fullest.
Niel Perry’s father, Thomas Perry, disagrees and tries to stop Niel from performing in a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” He goes against his father’s request and earns the lead role of Puck. Mr Perry discovers that Niel has been hiding and lying about the play on the opening night and tell Niel he will never perform again and pursue a career in medicine. Niel seeing his only escape vanish decides to commit suicide that same night. My heart shattered when I realised what he had done, and steamy tears streamed down my face.
As of this incident Mr. Keating is blamed and therefore fired. His students are distraught and show him their appreciation with a heartfelt goodbye.
Overall, this film is a masterpiece and will always hold a special place in my heart. It makes you sob is times of sorrow and laugh and smile in times of joy. Its message is educational and hard hitting although many people may not understand it as much as others.
