Woodcraft Folk is a youth organisation that focuses on sustainability and equality, if this sounds appealing to you then read on!
During the early 1900s, Woodcraft Folk began with ideas, starting in another youth-based organisation called The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift which was established in London and created in opposition to how it was believed that the Scouts (another more well-known group) were becoming militarized at the time.
In 1925, Woodcraft Folk was established by Leslie Paul who didn’t believe in the authoritarian way that things were being run by the leader of the Kibbo Kift and had decided to create the new group.
This was before the second world war so by the time that it had started, Woodcraft had been an organised group for many years and the groups (more commonly known as districts) that were near to the English Channel such as Brighthelmstone, were able to assist refugees who were fleeing the war, this spirit of giving and kindness is carried on in Woodcraft to this day.
The organisation also holds annual camps for people who are part of the same districts and as you may have guessed from the title of this article, there is something very special about this year.
In 2025, it will have been 100 years since Woodcraft Folk was first formed and the anniversary will be celebrated during the summer of next year, including all districts nationwide.
Traditionally, Woodcraft summer camps have involved things such as crafting, dancing and oneness with the natural world, but this year will also be the perfect opportunity for the youth to meet like-minded people and find hope in looking towards our future.
As Woodcraft Folk has always been an organisation that prioritizes the stability of the natural world, it is probably no surprise to hear of what stance they take in tackling issues such as the climate crisis and the state of which we have inherited our planet.
It strives to protect these things and nurture them in all the ways that it can which is why it is so very important that we in turn nurture the young minds organisations like it and continue to strive for the ability to continue to offer these experiences.
