Not far from the bustling city of London, you’ll find the town of Petworth, amongst the South Downs.

This small area is immersed in natural and historical sights to absorb - all within walking distance of the town centre’s most familiar landmark: Petworth House and gardens.

If you are looking for a short getaway in West Sussex, Petworth is definitely one to consider.

For any walking enthusiasts, you will love the straightforward and well-marked trails (way-south path, serpent trail), leading through shaded woodlands and expansive fields.

In case you are struggling to bring yourself to complete a full expedition, there are plenty of shorter routes you can download with just a click on your phone.

However, if you can find the time and endurance for a longer outing, I would strongly suggest committing to it in order to discover remote sights – only accessible by foot.

An excursion I recommend adding to your itinerary should most certainly be paying a visit to the palatial Petworth House.

Its vast gardens will leave you amazed, with its natural landscaping remodelled in the 1750s by the acclaimed architect Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown – earning his nickname from often suggesting to his clients that their estates have capability for refinement.

In the mid-twentieth century, following the death of the 3rd Earl of Egremont, the family began to face a financial decline and decided to hand over the property to the National Trust in hopes of preserving the house and collections.

Because of this, the house is open to the public to visit and explore its history.

During my visit I stayed in the rural Welldigger’s Arms known for its rich history and warm atmosphere.

The property features classic English architecture dating back to the 18th century, around the time of its founding.

A staff member mentioned, “the best time to visit is autumn,” highlighting the beauty of the surroundings during this season.

The establishment is located just a ten-minute drive from the town centre, though travelling by car will restrict you from the scenic greenery along the way.

The town of Petworth and its setting offer a tranquil escape from the constant hums of engines, beeping horns and overall hectic environment of the city.

As we progress further to the late months of the year, now is the perfect chance to enjoy the final days of 2024 outside before it becomes too cold to do so.

So, pack your walking shoes, find yourself a thick jacket and discover the beauty that awaits you in Petworth.
