Anne of Green Gables: Worth it or not?
Anne of Green Gables the first book of lovely coming-of-age book series by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery.
It follows a young, high-spirted orphan girl, Anne Shirley, as she goes through life, meeting friends and finding companionships that she will cherish and love.
She faces hardships, excitement and grief watching her grow and blossom from an excitable young girl into a confident, independent woman.
This book feels like running through a field in the warm summer breeze.
It truly made me fall in love with the characters and their unique personalities and made me weep in times of despair.
It is set in the late 19th century on Prince Edward Island.
A mistake occurs at the orphanage when Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, siblings, send for a boy to adopt.
Anne gets sent instead.
The Cuthberts take her in despite their disagreements and grow to care for and protect the young girl.
Before reading the children's novel I watched the Netflix TV adaptation, ‘Anne with an E’ to compare the two and I was quite underwhelmed.
The book had much more detail and quicker pace than the series.
Not only this but the series missed out some important aspects of Anne’s life.
However, it did capture the charm and authenticity of the characters.
Which is important to connect and relate to the characters.
I suggest reading the book before watching the film adaptation as then you can get full experience and insight of young, imaginative Anne Shirley.
Overall I believe that this book is guaranteed a good and emotional read.
