Hastings United made it through to the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup after two second-half spot-kicks gave them a 2-0 victory at home to County League side Rye United.
Lee Carey broke the deadlock after the interval with a coolly converted penalty after substitute Michael Phillips’ header hit the bar and Matt Maclean’s follow-up was handled.
Then with 12 minutes left Nathan Goddon tripped Tim Olorunda and this time Phillips squeezed the penalty past the goalkeeper.
Former Hastings midfielder Duncan McArthur capped a disappointing night for the visitors when he got a second yellow card for a silly swing at Carey.
Hastings face a trip to Lewes in the third round but both sides have tricky festive fixtures ahead.
