Worthing are reaping the rewards of making a brave decision.

There were a few eyebrows raised when the Rebels appointed Simon Colbran as manager in the summer.

Joint bosses Alan Pook and Danny Bloor had managed the club to the Ryman division one south play-offs in each of the last two seasons.

Although Pook had decided to step down, Bloor made it clear he wanted to stay on in sole charge and was expected to get the job.

Even when Bloor was told to apply, the appointment was expected to be a formality by some.

Others craved for a change and for an old Worthing favourite like Jimmy Quinn to return while former Lewes boss Kevin Keehan was also keen on the position.

Colbran’s appointment was something of a surprise but now joint chairman Dave Agnew insists his committee got it right.

Agnew said: “It has worked out extremely well.

“It was a difficult decision. Danny Bloor is a personal friend of mine and it was tough to put him out of a job.

“But Simon showed credentials in his interview which we liked. He has done extremely well and has kept the policy of working with our youngsters.”

Worthing topped the table at one stage and are currently second, 11 points clear of the first club outside the play-off places.
