Ten-man Eastbourne Borough were punished deep in stoppage time for the second game in succession as they went down 2-1 at home to Ebbsfleet.

Having conceded in the fourth minute of injury time to draw 1-1 at Salisbury on Saturday, Borough lost to a 95th minute strike in this Bank Holiday clash.

Goalkeeper Danny Knowles was both hero and villain for Borough, saving a first-half penalty but conceding one in the second half which earned him a red card.

Former Crawley striker Magno Vieira converted the spot-kick but Borough refused to buckle and Jamie Taylor levelled 21 minutes from time.

They seemed to have done enough for a point only for Simon Thomas to break their hearts late on Borough made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Salisbury on Saturday with skipper Paul Armstrong returning for Matt Smart and Nathan Crabb earning a first start of the campaign in place of Dan Smith, who was not in the 16.

The visitors threatened early on when Ishmael Welsh's low shot was pushed around a post by Knowles at the expense of a corner.

Borough responded with Andy Atkin's header sending Matt Crabb away and he centred for Taylor who shot straight at keeper Lance Cronin from a great position.

Atkin had a decent chance just before the half-hour mark when the ball broke kindly to him in the penalty area but he seemed to be taken by surprise by the opening and Cronin blocked his shot.

Borough struck the woodwork five minutes before the break when Taylor acrobatically met Matt Crabb's corner from the right, hooking it on to Cronin's left-hand post.

Then came the talking point of the half a a casual looking Marc Pullan was beaten to the ball by Simon Thomas who burst away down the left and was brought down by Gary Elphick as he cut inside. Thomas took the penalty but Knowles made a great save to his left.

Ebbsfleet broke the deadlock from a second penalty 11 minutes into the second half. Elphick was at fault again, letting Vieira to nip past him before being brought down by Knowles who was shown a straight red card.

Borough threw on reserve goalkeeper Michael Jorgan but his first task was to pick Vieira's penalty out of the net.

Pullan limped off moments later and skipper Paul Armstrong also departed in a double substitution.

Against the odds, Borough drew level on 69 minutes when Taylor latched on to Ben Austin's long through ball, brought it under control and slid his shot under keeper Cronin.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time Vieira drove in a shot which hit the knee of Thomas and deflected into the corner of the net.
