Horsham YMCA fought back from an early setback to earn a point at home to Walton and Hersham in their first game back in divison one south following promotion.
Tom Graves sliced a clearance into his own net after just two minutes but Tom Manton equalised from the penalty spot on the half hour after Paul Elliott had been pulled down in the area.
Boss Chris White said: “People will look at the score and say it was a decent result for us but I think it was two points dropped.
“It took us ten or 15 minutes to regain our composure after going behind but after that we were by far the better side.
“Our keeper didn’t have a save to make while Steve Sargent and Tom Lawley were denied by fine stops. They have been tipped to do well this season though so on that evidence we have got nothing to fear.”
New boss Simon Colbran was a disappointed man as Worthing went down 2-0 away to Leatherhead.
The Rebels felt they should have had a penalty with the game goalless when Stuart Axten appeared to be pushed over.
Russell Tanner saved a late penalty to earn Eastbourne Town a goalless draw at Walton Casuals.
Matt Sellick committed a foul with ten minutes to go but Tanner spared his blushes with a fine save from the spot kick. Boss Ady Colwell said: “I will probably be the happiest of the two managers with a point.”
Boss Gary Croydon felt Burgess Hill deserved better as they lost 1-0 at home to Whitstable in division one south yesterday.
Keeper Joe Adams was at fault for the goal but Croydon’s tale of woe did not end there.
He said: “We hit the woodwork twice, had three cleared off the line and Steve Harper missed two great chances. But I’m happy with how we played.”
