Whitehawk missed out on a home tie with Eastbourne Town after a hugely disappointing FA Cup exit.
The Hawks, who have rebuilt their squad during the summer with a title challenge in mind, produced an under-par display as they went down 2-1 at home to Hythe Town.
Summer signing Wes Tate scored his first goal for the club to level matters midway through the second half but Hythe struck a winner 11 minutes from time.
Joint manager George Parris said: “We made them look a lot better than they were but they were deserved winners.
“We want to win every game so we are disappointed, but more so with the performance than the result.”
Shoreham produced the most eye-catching result with a 5-2 victory away to Croydon thanks to Dean Smith (two), Nick Fogden, Liam O’Brien and an own goal.
The Musselmen travelled to the game by coach and joint boss Mark Burt believes it helped. He said: “A lot of the lads haven’t done this before and it is great for bonding.”
Shoreham are now at home to Crawley Down who ran out 4-1 winners against Westfield (Surrey) at The Haven with goals from Sam Cane (two), Tony Reid and Lee Waterhouse. New signing Aaron Watson went home disappointed after hitting the woodwork on three occasions.
Chichester booked a home tie with AFC Totton after an impressive 3-1 win away to Three Bridges despite having Joe Briggs sent off midway through the second half for two bookable offences. Callum Cutler scored twice and James Searle got the other.
Eastbourne United had eight players missing, including three with swine flu, but still managed to beat Redhill 3-1 with goals from James MacKenzie, Steve Dallaway and Steve Morris.
Lee Farrell scored a late winner as second division East Preston won 2-1 at Camberley Town.
Manager Trevor Waller was delighted with Farrell and fellow scorer Terry Dodd. He said: “We know they can score goals, it is just about being solid and giving them the opportunity.”
Manager Steve Johnson’s decision to play midfielder Dave Gellatly up front paid dividends as the player scored a hat-trick in East Grinstead’s 4-1 defeat of Feltham. John Sinclair also netted.
Lingfield walloped fellow County League side Hailsham 7-1 with Joel Hughes scoring a hat-trick and Joel Greaves grabbing two.
They now entertain Southwick who came from behind to beat Herne Bay 2-1 thanks to James Wotherspoon’s penalty and a late Nick Green winner.
Mile Oak won 3-1 at Peacehaven with efforts from Kieran Howard, Chris Paine with a 30-yard free-kick and substitute Marc Rewell.
Rob Wimble and Joe Miles scored for Selsey in a 2-0 win at Lancing while Wick sank Frimley Green 4-0 thanks to George Gaskin, Phil Turner, Brett Torode and Scott Murfin.
Brett Forden’s penalty earned Pagham a 1-1 draw at Banstead, although Michael Frangou nearly won it with a late header.
Tom Saunders scored for Crowborough who appeared to be heading through until Neil Shipperley’s Bedfont Town side struck two minutes from time to secure a replay.
Dave Altendorff twice equalised for Ringmer in a 2-2 draw at Egham Town.
