Capel Wilson, undisputedly one of the leading stayers in training, can crown a marvellous run of form by landing tonight’s final of the £8,000 Coral Regency (9.45) over 695 metres at Coral Brighton and Hove Stadium.

First run as a Produce Stakes in 1948, the Regency became an all-aged stayers’ feature in 1966 and a number of the great champions have won this prestigious prize, including Glin Bridge (1975), Westmead Champ (1976), Scurlogue Champ (1985) and Flying Winner last year.

Ante-post favourite Capel Wilson (trap one), recent winner of the £3,000 Queen Mother Memorial Cup (660m, Sheffield) and bidding to reel off a ninth successive victory, looks a worthy favourite to take the title.

Representing the Gifkins family, who guided Honest Lord to Regency glory a decade ago, Capel Wilson defends an unblemished record in the competition, boasts arguably the best form in the race and lines up from a favourable inside draw.

The main threat is likely to come from Lorrys Options (trap two), who gained his biggest success to date in the £15,000 Ladbrokes Golden Jacket over Crayford’s 714 metres in February and is beginning to show his true prowess.

Hill Tipoki, trained by John Mullins, has proved a revelation since making the transition to six bends and, for those punters in search of a value-for-money wager, this lightly-raced type fits the bill.

Bea And Bea (trap three), Brimardon Helen (trap four) and Brimardon Star (trap six) complete the line-up in a showdown that is deservedly billed as one of the highlights of the season at Nevill Road.

Entry is free and the gala card starts at 7.25pm. Coverage of the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Chelsea will be screened live at the track.
