Carley Wenham completed a sprint double to help Crawley get their Southern Women’s League campaign off to a perfect start.
Wenham cruised to victory in the 100m and 200m in 12.3sec and 24.8sec respectively as Crawley won the opening senior division two match at Perivale. The 21-year-old former English Schools silver medalist was also part of the victorious relay quartets as Crawley only dropped 16 points all afternoon.
Worthing and District Harriers were a distant second place with Jo Davison winning the hammer and discus.
Crawley team manager Lizzie Maries said: “We weren’t sure how we would get on as this is our first season in the senior division but after Saturday we are confident we can win it.”
Kate Kaye did the 800m and 1,500m double as Horsham Blue Star Harriers got off to a solid start in the premier division. Helen Morton also won the high jump as Harriers came second behind hosts Wycombe Phoenix at Reading but it was a disappointing day for Brighton and Hove City who finished last and sit second from bottom of the table.
Georgie Ungoed, Elise Lovell and Cara Pain all claimed wins as a combined Hastings and Eastbourne Rovers team were runners-up at Bournemouth in division one while Haywards Heath Harriers were third at Braunton.
East Grinstead lead division two south after a big win at Wimbledon.
