Holders Rottingdean made a winning start in their defence of the East Sussex League’s Intersport of Lewes Trophy.
Henry Ledden top-scored with 34 as they were bowled out for 123 away to Alfriston but that proved enough as the hosts were dismissed for 87 in reply with George Ledden taking 5-12 and Mark Smith 2-4.
They will now face Fletching who rattled up 244-3 from their 40 overs away to Firle with contributions from Simon Stevens (81), Terry Lucas (58) and Dan Saunders (33 not out). Karoki Lewis hit 51 in reply and Andy Bird 31 but Firle were bowled out for 184 with Tom Crook (4-24) doing the damage.
Opener Ian Cox cracked 101 not out and Christian Hart 73 as Heathfield Park made 211-2 away to Iden but the hosts were not daunted by the target which they reached with 6.4 overs to spare and five wickets in hand. David White hit 78 and Phil Shanks 36.
Next up for Iden is St Peters who won by seven wickets at home to East Dean. Rodney Mutiah (3-20) and Jake Comaschi (3-28) combined to dismiss the visitors for 108 and Ian Fennell led the victory charge with an unbeaten 72.
Crowhurst Park will face Rye in the quarter-finals. New skipper Paul Brookes top-scored as Park posted a massive 259-9, with further contributions coming from Colin Ayres (38), Peter Eames (31) and 14-year-old debutant Ed Smissen.
Dale Mayhew took 4-52 for Herstmonceux who made a battling 220 all out in reply thanks mainly to David Bowden’s superb 123. He shared a third-wicket stand of 97 with Mike Watson (29) but the visitors fell 40 runs short as Brookes completed a good day with 4-39 from his seven overs.
Rye scored 196-7 away to Laughton with 14-year-old William Baker scoring 44 not out, Dan Brownbill 40 and Tim Brownbill 37. Laurie Gillman cracked 97 not out in reply but gained little support as Laughton were bowled out for 128 with Martin Blincow taking 3-35.
The final last eight clash will see Forest Row taking on Polegate and Stone Cross. Forest Row, who replaced Bells Yew Green in the competition, restricted Ringmer to 189-8 with Steve Wright taking 3-16 and then knocked off the runs with two overs and three wickets to spare thanks to 96 not out from Neil Divall. For Ringmer, Ray Russell hit 55 and Dave Page took 3-40.
Nick Corbett led the way for Polegate and Stone Cross as they made 45 away to Lewes St Michael’s, who were bowled out off the last ball still three runs short of their target. Salkfield hit 54 and Saunders 49 while Steve Hover took 4-35.
Quarter-final draw: Rottingdean v Fletching, St Peters v Iden, Forest Row v Polegate and Stone Cross, Rye v Crowhurst Park.
