Brighton player-coach Neil McGovern has relived the amazing 90-metre try which clinched his side a league and cup double.

But he admitted Uckfield pushed them all the way for silverware.

The Blues, already champions of Sussex One, came from 12-3 down at half-time to win 15-12 at Uckfield in the final of the Sussex Shield.

Outside centre Ash Hallett broke away for the winning try which Alex Finch converted.

McGovern, who was playing at inside centre, said: “We were set up for a kick near our own line but their backs rushed up so I dummied the kick, chucked the ball to Ash and off he went.

“I wasn’t going to chase after him, neither could their boys.”

Adam Salvage also scored a Brighton try and Finch kicked an early penalty.

Uckfield were on course for a famous win when two tries sent them into a 12-3 half-time lead.

Joel Forward got the first after a run by Nick Ridley.

Greg Chappel scored soon after with Luke Yaafe this time adding the conversion.

McGovern added: “There’s a misconception we are head and shoulders above everyone in Sussex One but it’s just a case of our boys maintaining high standards for 80 minutes.

“Not many sides in Sussex One do that but Uckfield are one of the few who do.”

This Saturday is the last scheduled day of league fixtures in most divisions, although some teams have over-run because of the bad weather during the winter.
