Worthing's Ryman League division one south play-off hopes suffered a blow as they went down 2-0 away to Ashford Town.

The Rebels squandered a good opportunity to take the lead when Ross Treleaven shot wide and then paid the price as the home side went ahead following a rare mistake from goalkeeper Alan Mansfield.

Ashford scored a second before half-time.

Defeat dropped Worthing into fifth spot – the final play-off place – with a four-point gap on Sittingbourne in sixth spot and four matches to play.

Ady Colwell says Eastbourne Town will do all they can to help Worthing tonight when they meet leaders Kingstonian.

England Schools international James Norwood scored on his return to the side as Town ended a run of three defeats with a 1-0 win at Leatherhead.

Town will not make the end of season play-offs but boss Colwell will not allow his men to ease off.

He said: “We will be giving it all we can to do Worthing a favour.

“We will give it 100% and try to get something out of the game.”

Norwood’s goal came during the first half after Town broke quickly from a Tanners corner with Greg Manton instrumental in the build-up.

Burgess Hill climbed out of the bottom two following a 2-0 win over visitors Whyteleafe.

Steve Harper, witha superb volley, and Wes Tate got the goals after the break as Hillians gave James Shaw his debut in goal.

Shaw was called in when young Charlton pro Callum Christie was devastated by the sudden death of his landlady of three years.

Hillians boss Gary Croydon said: “It was an excellent win. Harps has had a rough season and often been starved of service but he can score a goal out of nothing and, with quality players like him in our side, I am confident we will not go down.”

Whyteleafe had a player sent off in injury time.

Crowborough went down 5-1 away to Dulwich Hamlet with substitute Scott Treleaven getting their consolation in the second half with a smart volley at the far post after good work down the left from Dan Dunford. Crows started well but conceded two soft goals before half-time and there was no way back.
