The Sussex County League may have to consider a name change.
This is because Surrey sides Dorking Wanderers, Horley Town and Merstham could all be joining it next season.
Redhill and Lingfield, for some bizarre reason, are already there, so something like the Two Counties League or Southern Counties League would be far more appropriate.
Which is a shame.
The Sussex County is not a regional league and should be for clubs from within these borders only.
To change would dilute its appeal and insult its long and well respected history.
Imagine this scenario in a few years time.
Horley v Redhill go headto- head in deepest Surrey on the last day of the season to decide the destiny of the County League title.
Or Dorking Wanderers face Redhill in the RUR Cup final at Culver Road.
Not quite right is it?
Dorking are being considered because they are champions of the West Sussex League which is a feeder to the County League.
Quite why a team based five miles south of the M25 should be playing in a Sussex League is unclear.
Merstham and Horley are in a difficult situation.
They may be squeezed out of the Combined Counties League through no fault of their own because relegation from other leagues will make the Combined Counties too big.
This is nothing to with the people who run the County or Combined Counties Leagues but they may have to obey edicts from the people higher up the pyramid.
Let's hope the decisionmakers see sense before they ruin our leagues.
