Lewes were unable to make it good news on and off the pitch as they went down 2-0 at home to Woking in Blue Square south.
Managing director Martin Elliott announced before the game that he had reached an agreement with HM Revenue and Customs which should avert a winding-up petition in the High Court on Wednesday.
However, Steve Ibbitson's men were unable to follow that with a win as they lost by a goal at the end of each half in front of a crowd of 675.
Woking were at their most dangerous on the break and they threatened with a burst from the back on 12 minutes which ended with Rikki Banks clawing away a shot from Moses Ademola.
There was little between the sides in the first half but Lewes seemed to be just building up a head of steam when they fell behind a minute before the break.
It came from a Lewes corner as Harry Arter led a break, feeding right-back Rikki Annane who took it on and drove the ball fiercely past Banks.
Sam Sloma wastefully headed over at the bar post for the visitors early in the second half which prompted a double Lewes substitution.
The change gave them some extra impetus and Joe Keehan, arriving late, fired over the bar after a great burst down the right from David Wheeler.
The Cards had manager Graham Baker sent to the stands for kicking a spare ball at the linesman when he felt the official failed to act on a substitution.
Baker could face further rebuke for berating the linesman before being asked again to leave the field.
Lewes had a shout for a penalty appeal turned down when Dan Royce went down under challenge from former Rook Aswad Thomas.
The Rooks pushed for an equaliser without really threatening and were punished from another break in the second minute of stoppage time when substitute Charlie Moone drilled the ball home after good work down the right by Ademola.
