Ireland all-rounder John Mooney has been handed a trial by Sussex.
Mooney, 30, will play two four-day games and five T20s for the county’s second XI.
He famously hit the winning runs in Ireland’s World Cup victory over England in Bangalore.
The trial came about via Ireland team-mate Ed Joyce who is in his fourth season with Sussex.
Mooney said: “Last summer, after we played England, Mark Robinson (Sussex coach) was asking questions and he seemed keen enough. Ed put me on to it, but nothing really happened.
“But a couple of weeks ago, Carl Hopkinson (2nd XI coach) rang to ask if I would come over and play a few games so they could have a look at me.
“I am going over to use it to get some game time, and hopefully from there, maybe make my way into the first team.
“It is an opportunity to play cricket, and if I do well, I may get a look in for the Twenty20 side.”
