Matt Prior was the hero as Sussex clinched a crucial win over Kent at Canterbury.
Prior made 89 in Sussex's total of 159-6 and it proved too much for the Spitfires as they finished 15 runs short on 144-8.
Darren Stevens finished unbeaten on 65 to give Kent hope but Umar Gul ensured it was to be Sussex's night with figures of 3-26.
The result kept Sussex in third place in the south division ahead of their penultimate match against leaders Hampshire at Hove on Sunday.
