Sussex's bowlers enjoyed a productive day before rain washed out their Championship game against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
They reduced Lancashire to 131-5 from 56.1 overs before the first day's play was abandoned.
The only bowler to go wicketless was Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla who has returned for a second spell as overseas player until the end of the season.
There were two wickets for Dwayne Smith, who trapped VVS Laxman lbw before ending an obdurate innings from Mark Chilton who edged to slip just before rain forced the players off.
Corey Collymore and Robin Martin-Jenkins both bowled economical spells which brought them a wicket each but the key breakthrough was made by off-spinner Ollie Rayner who had Mal Loye caught at Chawla for 52, his seventh half-century of the season.
