A week after playing a key role in Sussex’s Twenty20 Cup triumph Will Beer enjoyed another day to remember at The Oval last Sunday.
Being there while England regained the Ashes was only part of a special day for the 20-year-old leg-spinner who also met his hero Shane Warne.
Warne gave Beer and Somerset’s leg-spinner Max Waller some tips during a masterclass on the Oval pitch during the lunch break before the trio chatted for another 30 minutes once the cameras had stopped rolling.
Warne, the best leg-spinner in the history of the game, was certainly impressed with Beer, not only for his ability to bowl most variations but also his phlegmatic temperament.
And his message to the Sussex youngster? You cannot bowl too many balls or practice enough.
Beer said: “It was a great experience. He’s my hero and I got into bowling leg spin from watching Shane.
“I had met a couple of times when I was 14 or 15 at one of the spin clinics run by his old coach Terry Jenner but it is the first time I had met him properly.
“It was just nice to watch him bowl. It was the first time he had played for six months since the IPL but it seemed to be coming out pretty well.”
