Sussex second-team coach Mark Davis has turned down the chance to join Chris Adams at Surrey.

Adams, who left Hove after 11 years as captain in December to become director of cricket at the Oval, wanted Davis to be assistant first-team coach.

But Davis, who joined the coaching staff at Sussex after retiring in 2005, decided to stay.

Coach Mark Robinson said: “As a coach Mark has grown into the job every year and he has shown great loyalty to the club.

“It is great testament to him that he has been sought out by a supposedly bigger club and it’s a great bonus for us that he wants to stay with Sussex.

“He has decided to stay because he thinks there is some unfinished work with this squad. We have brought in some new members to our support staff with James West joining us as strength and conditioning coach and our backroom team is now very strong.”

Meanwhile, West Indies’ fast bowler Corey Collymore is expected to arrive on Saturday after finally receiving his work permit.

The 30-year-old, who signed a new one-year deal with the county last month, is unlikely to feature in Sunday’s Friends Provident Trophy opener against Gloucestershire.

Robinson added: “Sunday will be a bit too early for him but depending on what shape he is in he could play against Lancashire in the Championship on Tuesday.

“The squad is starting to settle down. Damien Wright flew in last night which leaves only Jason Lewry and Pepler Sandri out of contention as far as the bowling is concerned.”
