Skipper Chris Adams is delighted with Sussex's preparations for the new season ahead of their first Hove friendly.

The county will again be mixing up the squad in two 50 overs games, the first of which takes place against Glamorgan today (11am).

Adams is happy to have another chance to gauge the progress of the young players who so impressed him on the tour to Dubai.

Sussex only won one of their four matches, against Yorkshire, but Adams declared the trip to the desert "a massive success."

The likes of Tom Smith, Michael Thornely, Ollie Rayner and Will Beer all impressed. And with several experienced players still not back they will get further opportunities against both Glamorgan and Gloucestershire later in the week.

Adams said: "I didn't go to Dubai with great expectations from a team perspective. Mainly I wanted to charge my batteries and get ready for another big season.

"But I was very keen to see how some of our younger players are developing because, during the season, I don't get a great deal of opportunity to watch them.

"I wouldn't say I was surprised at what I saw because I knew already that they are good cricketers. They wouldn't be on our staff if they weren't.

"But I was really pleased with their development. Michael Thornely looks strong and an imposing figure at the crease now while our three spinners - Smith, Rayner and Beer - are really improving.

"Tom Smith looks a really good cricketer and Ollie seems to have settled some technical issues. We feel we could have made a breakthrough with him.

"And Will Beer bowled exceptionally well against Yorkshire. He took 3-34 and I don't remember him bowling a bad ball - he certainly outbowled their two leg spinners Adil Rashid and Mark Lawson who are much more experienced."

New fast bowler Ryan Harris arrives from Australia tomorrow and should get his first run-out against Gloucestershire while Murray Goodwin and Mushtaq Ahmed are due back next week after completing their commitments in the Indian Cricket League.

Jason Lewry, who did not go to Dubai because of a family illness, will get his first competitive run-out this week.

Sussex's AGM takes place at the Old Ship Hotel tonight (6.30pm) where the county will report an operating deficit of £303,000. Chairman David Green is also expected to update members on the latest plans for ground redevelopment which were put on hold earlier this month.
