Matt Hobden took his maiden Championship wicket just before lunch on the opening day of Sussex’s clash with Nottinghamshire at Hove.
Hobden had Phil Jacques caught behind by Matt Prior – keeping wicket for the first time in a first-class match since December - for 67 as Notts reached 111-2 after the morning session.
The breakthrough was a big moment for the 21-year-old seamer from Eastbourne and also gave Sussex something to celebrate after a largely luckless morning.
Skipper Ed Joyce put Notts in after winning the toss and Sussex should have struck immediately when Ben Brown dropped a good chance to remove Jacques for just four at first slip.
Magoffin was the unfortunate bowler and Jacques rubbed salt in the wound by hitting his fellow Aussie for four fours in one over as he raced to his 50 off just 60 balls.
Jaqcues did live something of a charmed life, however, as he flashed an edge past Rory Hamilton-Brown at second slip off the bowling of Jimmy Anyon and also nicked a ball from Hobden which Prior was unable to take.
It was Anyon who made the initial breakthrough for Sussex – who are missing Mike Yardy through injury while Ashar Zaidi and Matt Machan have been left out of the side - as he had Alex Hales caught low down at first slip by Brown for 16.
