Matt Prior has vowed to beat the injury which has put his international future in doubt.
Prior will make his comeback from an Achilles problem in Sussex’s NatWest Twenty20 Blast game at Glamorgan tonight after eight weeks on the sidelines.
It will be the first time Prior has kept wicket since he was dropped by England after the third Ashes Test in Perth in December.
Prior is determined his international career will not end on a low note and is confident of putting his name in the frame for the opening Test against Sri Lanka on June 12.
Prior said: “I am more confident than I have been for a while. It’s been a very tough time but I am desperate to be fit for that first Test.
“I want to prove my fitness and form and then hopefully get selected because it is a huge honour to represent your country.
“It is easy to forget that sometimes until suddenly someone comes and says you are not playing. Then it becomes very clear what you want so I would say I am more determined than I have ever been.
“The last six weeks or so have been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. The way the injury reacts you will do something and it feels fine and then two hours later it flares up but for the last five days now I have had consistent results so I am very positive about it.”
Prior was due to make his comeback in Sussex’s Championship clash with Middlesex this week but the match was abandoned yesterday without a ball being bowled. The former Brighton College pupil did make a dash to Eastbourne on Wednesday to keep wicket for 30 overs for Sussex 2nd XI and was put through a rigorous training session by England wicketkeeping coach Bruce French at Merchant Taylors’ School yesterday.
Prior added: “It went really well on Wednesday and if I’m honest it was better than I thought it was going to be. “It was nice to get out there and the reaction from the injury has been really good. I woke up pain free so I’m good to go now. “I had a really good session with Bruce yesterday which was comfortably the hardest I have pushed it for months so the last two days have been really promising.
“I am definitely going to keep tonight and I will keep in the Notts game (on Sunday). Fingers crossed I will get through it all and if it keeps going like it is now I am very confident about the future.”
