Sussex are facing the prospect of losing star bowler Chris Jordan for the rest of the Championship season.
Jordan was named in the England one-day and T20 squads to face Sri Lanka yesterday, meaning he will miss the next two games against Middlesex and Nottinghamshire.
If the 25-year-old manages to force his way into the Test side – as is widely expected – he will be unavailable until the final two games of the season against Lancashire and Nottinghamshire.
Even then England may request that the former Surrey quick be rested after a busy summer, meaning he will only have played twice in the Championship all season.
England asked Sussex to rest Jordan for the opening match of the campaign and the current game against Durham while he missed the draw at Old Trafford last week to attend a national training camp ahead of the ODI against Scotland.
Coach Mark Robinson said: “CJ’s star is shining at the moment. He is playing good, exciting cricket so we are really proud of him.
“I think there is every chance he will be in and around the Test team but if he does he has then got to stay in it so a lot can happen between now and the end of the summer.”
Sussex will at least not lose the services of Luke Wright after the all-rounder was omitted from both limited overs squads yesterday despite hitting a career-best 189 in the current match against Durham.
Wright was named in the squad for the World Twenty20 in March but was forced to pull out due to a side strain and had struggled for runs in the previous tours of West Indies and Australia during the winter.
England are due to play a solitary T20 international against Sri Lanka at the Oval on May 20 followed by five ODIs which precede a two Test series.
T20 squad: Morgan (Middlesex), Ali (Worcestershire), Bell (Warwickshire), Bopara (Essex), Bresnan (Yorkshire), Buttler (Lancashire), Carberry (Hampshire), Gurney (Nottinghamshire), Hales (Nottinghamshire), Jordan (Sussex), Root (Yorkshire), Tredwell (Kent), Woakes (Warwickshire).
ODI squad: Cook (Essex), Anderson (Lancashire), Ballance (Yorkshire), Bell (Warwickshire), Bopara (Essex), Bresnan (Yorkshire), Buttler (Lancashire), Carberry (Hampshire), Gurney (Nottinghamshire), Jordan (Sussex), Morgan (Middlesex), Root (Yorkshire), Tredwell (Kent), Woakes (Warwickshire).
