Ashar Zaidi believes he has done enough to earn a permanent contract at Sussex.

Zaidi has impressed in his two games for Sussex since applying for a trial but coach Mark Robinson has yet to decide whether to offer him a deal.

The 32-year-old is due to fly to Bangladesh tomorrow to play in the Dhaka Premier League for Gazi Tank alongside Scott Styris – although those plans may be disrupted by a suspected broken finger suffered against Durham this week.

The former Pakistan A international hopes his agent will have negotiated a deal with Sussex by the time he returns to England in ten days’ time otherwise he may have to consider other options.

Zaidi said: “I have worked hard these last few weeks to try to get something. I’ve given 100% on and off the field so I am looking forward to a positive response.

“I’ve not had any hints but I am hopeful. I think I have done my part to get them interested but we’ll have to wait and see.

“My agent has been in touch with other counties but no deals have come up so far and obviously Sussex would be my first choice as they were the ones to give me a chance.

“Ideally I would like to stay somewhere up north like Lancashire but I’m a professional which means you’ve got to move and adapt to whatever comes your way so that is not an issue.”

Zaidi took five wickets with his left-arm spin in his maiden Championship appearance against Yorkshire two weeks ago and proved he was a capable batsman by scoring 45 in the first innings against Durham this week.

Robinson is aware his performances could have alerted other counties to his ability saying: “That is the risk with anything. Two weeks ago the guy was playing in the Lancashire League but now he will have come to the attention of a lot of people.”
