Sussex's slim title hopes are over after they suffered one of the heaviest defeats in the club's history.
Durham romped to a 285 run victory at Chester-le-Street before tea on the third day after bowling Sussex out for just 116 in their second innings.
That was just four runs more than the record low total of 112 they had made against Durham the previous day and their combined total of 228 in the match was their worst since making 222 against Hampshire and Surrey back in 1926.
It was Durham's largest margin of runs victory ever against Sussex and the ninth biggest margin of defeat for Sussex against anyone in first class cricket.
Sussex had bowled out Durham for 268 in the morning leaving them requiring 402 to win but only Mike Yardy, Chris Nash and Steve Magoffin managed to get into double figures.
Victory sent Durham to the top of the Championship division one table and emphatically ended any hope Sussex had of claiming the title for a fourth time.
