Chris Jordan has been tipped to make England’s Ashes squad this winter.

Jordan, pictured below, was included in an England squad for the first time yesterday when he was named along with Sussex team-mate Luke Wright in a 14-man ODI party for the upcoming games against Ireland and Australia.

The 24-year-old has been a revelation since joining Sussex from Surrey during the winter, taking 51 wickets in the Championship, and Sussex skipper Ed Joyce believes he is a strong candidate to travel Down Under this winter.

Jordan has been less impressive in one-day cricket for the Sharks, taking 11 wickets in six matches, but Joyce believes he has been called up by England as a dress rehearsal ahead of the Ashes in Australia.

Joyce said: “Chris has not played as well in one-day cricket for us as he has in four-day but England are obviously keen to have a look at him with a view to the winter.

“He has been superb for us this season and if he continues to perform the way he has for the rest of the summer then that should be enough to push for a Test spot.

“If he performs well for England in the one-day series there is absolutely no reason why he can't be on that plane in the winter.”

Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad are England first choice seamers in Test cricket but the third spot has been shared between Steven Finn, Tim Bresnan and Chris Woakes this summer. Graham Onions and Chris Tremlett have also been in Ashes squads this summer without playing.

Bresnan is currently ruled out with a back injury while Woakes struggled on his Test debut at the Oval last week and has been left out of the one-day squad for the one-off game against Ireland and five-match series against Australia.

Joyce added: “If England are looking for another fast bowler to take to Australia then he is right up there with the best in the country. He is a quality all round cricketer too who bats at number eight and is a brilliant slip fielder so he covers a lot of bases.”
