ussex have challenged on-loan Steffan Piolet to show he can offer them something new.
The Warwickshire all-rounder has moved south for the rest of the season and is currently involved in the 2nd XI Championship tussle with Northants at Horsham.
Piolet, who played for Cuckfield and Sussex 2nd XI at the start of his career, is out of contract at Edgbaston this winter.
Sussex coach Mark Robinson believes the Bears would be interested in keeping him for the one-day competitions.
But he is also intrigued to see whether the 25-year-old right-arm medium pacer can be more than just a limited-overs contributor for Sussex.
Robinson said: “We’ve got a couple of second team games we want to see him in to see how he performs.
“We have seen a lot of him in white-ball cricket. We haven’t seen so much of him in red-ball cricket, which is the idea now.
“We want to see if he is an option for the future or not.
“We are always on the lookout for all-rounders and we know Stef as a character.
“We want to see if he could potentially fill a role in the future.”
Robinson was non-committal as to whether Piolet could feature for Sussex in the Championship run-in.
The county are next in action they visit Worcestershire in the YB40 on Monday.
Piolet is not being allowed to play in their next Championship match, against his parent club.
That leaves three more Championship fixtures in September, against Durham (home and away) and Yorkshire (home).
Robinson added: “Warwickshire want to keep him because of what he offers them in a one-day capacity.
“You’ve got to be fair to Stef. For us to be able to keep him we have got to be able to offer him more than just white-ball cricket.
“We will find out in the next few weeks whether we will be able to do that.
“We will see whether he will offer something we haven’t got.”
