STEVIE Morrison and Ben Rhodes’ bid for bronze today fell flat at the London 2012 regatta as Danish pair Allan Norregaard and Peter Lang held onto the third place in the aftermath of the medal race.
Morrison and Rhodes were left with just bronze to fight for in the 49er medal showdown after the Australian and New Zealand boats wrapped up gold and silver after the series of ten races.
And with eight points separating the Danes in third and Austrian’s Nico Delle Karth and Nikolaus Resch in seventh Morrison and Rhodes, placed fifth, needed to win the medal race to stand any chance of bronze but even that might have not been enough.
They got off to a good start but let Delle Karth and Resch get too far away from them dropping from second to eventually end fifth as the Austrians took victory in the medal race.
However that wasn’t enough for them to claim bronze as a third-place finish from Norregaard and Lang securing them a place on the podium by a margin of four points.
The Danish pair ended with an overall total of 114, Austria four behind in fourth and Morrison and Rhodes remaining in fifth place – four places better than their efforts at Beijing 2008.
