Adam El-Abd has been told he will learn from his trip to Egypt, despite missing out on a World Cup debut.

The Albion defender was a frustrated spectator in Alexandria last night as the Pharaohs convincingly saw off Mozambique 2-0 in a qualifier for Brazil 2014.

El-Abd has spent more than two weeks training with Egypt and came on for 45 minutes in the friendly against Cameroon.

But he could not feature in competitive action as he waited for his Egyptian passport to be processed.

However he delayed his flight home so he could watch the game on the Mediterranean coast.

Seagulls boss Gus Poyet loves to see his players recognised by their national squads.

This was the first time El-Abd, whose father is Egyptian, had been called up.

Poyet said: “It’s always good to do something you are not used to.

“He had to get used to different football in a short period of time and learn quickly.

“It’s totally different to what he has been used to but that’s great. Some managers don’t like it (players being called up by national teams) but for me it’s great.”

El-Abd is expected to miss three more competitive fixtures this month but would love another call-up.

He tweeted: “Although it seems passport issues are going to prevent me playing any part in the qualifiers it still has been a positive experience.

“Want to thank all the boys for welcoming me in to the group. You have been different class!

“Want to thank Bob and the staff and wish everyone all the best in the coming matches.”
