Albion were in mourning today after Bobby Smith, one of the most popular players in their history, died aged 77.
Smith passed away at a nursing home in North London on Saturday after a short illness.
Although the centre-forward will always be remembered most for his exploits in Spurs' double winning team of 1960-61 he had a major impact when then Albion manager Archie Macaulay signed him in 1963 for £5,000 when the Seagulls were in the old Fourth Division.
Smith scored 20 goals in 33 appearances as Albion went up as champions but Smith played just one more game for the club the following season.
He had been suspended by the club for being overweight and then angered Albion with a series of unauthorised Sunday newspaper articles and had his contract terminated in September 1965.
He briefly played for Hastings United but left there in 1967, the club having already failed once to sack him.
Smith scored 208 goals in 317 appearances for Spurs after starting his career in 1950 with Chelsea.
Smith was part of the Tottenham teams that won the 1962 FA Cup and 1963 European Cup Winners' Cup and scored 13 goals for England in 15 games.
He scored 33 goals in Tottenham's 1960-61 double-winning campaign, having joined the club in 1955.
