Dean Cox has been challenged to play a central role for Albion in 2010.

The little playmaker, best known for his work down the flanks, has been used further infield by boss Gus Poyet in recent games.

He was given a first start in seven matches at Wycombe on Monday and was in creative mood from central areas.

Poyet would love to see more of that in a new year schedule which kicks off at Torquay in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Seagulls chief said: “I had a good chat with Coxy. He is used to playing on the left but I told him I think he has got qualities to come off the line and play in the middle.

“I think the first half at Wycombe was impressive.

“I’m very pleased for him because he was waiting for the chance after playing for me in the first two or three games.

“He is very good on the ball, he is very energetic.

“He passes and moves, he is always available.

“He takes responsibility on the ball and that’s the type of team we want to make.

“He is giving me problems for next game and I like that, “Then it’s up to me to keep everyone happy because everyone deserves to play.”

Torquay will be without central defender Chris Robertson and penalty-taking midfielder Nicky Wroe for Saturday’s tie.

They both moved on to five bookings in a 2-1 defeat at Bournemouth on Monday.
