George Barker is the toast of Albion’s youngsters today after securing a glamour clash against Premier League giants Everton.
The prolific striker’s hat-trick clinched a 3-1 victory at Northampton last night and a place in the fourth round at home to Everton in the new year.
Barker, also on target in the previous round against Ebbsfleet, has already gained first team recognition. He was in the squad as an unused substitute when director of youth Martin Hinshelwood was in caretaker charge for the FA Cup tie at Wycombe Wanderers.
Barker headed Steve Brown’s side into a 16th-minute lead from a corner but that was cancelled out 11 minutes later by a deflected 20-yard shot from Josh Moreman.
Barker put the Seagulls back in front on 34 minutes, turning in Leon Redwood’s cross from close range, and completed his hat-trick with a low drive 15 minutes from time to set up the showdown with Everton at Withdean in the week commencing January 11.
Albion could find out tonight who will be their FA Cup third round hosts on January 2 when Stockport County play their delayed second round tie against Torquay United. The match has been switched to Macclesfield following two postponements at Edgeley Park, which County share with Sale rugby club.
Albion youth: Walker; Cooper, Smith, Strong, Dunk, Wilkins, Redwood, Thompson (Hayward 52), Hider, Barker, Caskey (Vickers 81). Subs not used: Sherriff, Godfrey, Bolwell.
