Russell Slade admitted Albion still have a lot of room of improvement after ending their six-game wait for a win.
But he was delighted with a first home clean sheet of the season as Wycombe were edged out 1-0 at Withdean today.
The result followed a 1-1 draw at Millwall and sees the Seagulls up two places to 21st in the League One table.
Boss Slade said: "We can take heart from the last two games.
"We've got four points and that is certainly moving in the right direction.
"There's a lot of work to be done. We are nowhere near the finished article but there were some good signs.
"I thought we saw there were little pockets, even in a game that was tight, when we played some enterprising football and looked as though we might score.
"There's a long way to go, we can't get carried away.
"I didn't get carried away when we lost, I'm certainly not going to get carried away now we've won."
Slade felt one goal would always be enough for his side to take three points.
He added: "The biggest buzz I got all afternoon was that, when we lost the ball, I thought we were nice and solid. That was important."
Slade confirmed Andrew Whing, who went off injured at the break, had suffered a dead leg.
He praised the efforts of Adam Virgo, who switched to right back for the second half, saying: "Fair play to the skipper, he's done a terrific job."
