Peter Taylor’s return with Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday is a timely reminder that Albion need to buck their ideas up at Withdean.
They were literally unbeatable on their own patch during Taylor’s brief reign.
The Seagulls’ home record under his command was played 17, won 12, drew five.
The 41 points taken out of a possible 51 played a massive part in that League One title triumph.
What a contrast to Albion’s horrendous recent record over the same number of games.
They have won just four, drawn two and lost 11 for a paltry points tally of 14.
There were signs of improvement under Russell Slade at the end of last season, when Oldham and Stockport were beaten back-to-back. Unfortunately, that has not carried over so far into the current campaign.
Albion’s home results are essentially responsible for their early position at the wrong end of the table.
When supporters were plotting the potential outcome of matches they would have accepted a point at both Brentford and Millwall.
They would not have been surprised at losing at Huddersfield, even if the emphatic nature of that defeat was unexpected.
The problem is two away points have been accompanied by none at home, where Albion have come unstuck against Walsall and Stockport.
An own goal in the first, two red cards and a penalty miss in the second, hardly helped.
But with all due respect to Walsall and Stockport, they are the sort of sides Albion must be beating in front of their own fans if they are to feature anywhere near the right end of the table this season.
The same applies to Taylor’s Wanderers. The point at Millwall only becomes worthwhile if it is followed by three more.
