Adam Virgo has warned Albion they cannot afford to relax despite climbing out of the League One relegation zone.
Virgo was outstanding at the heart of the defence as the Seagulls won 2-1 at Bristol Rovers to give themselves a two-point cushion above the bottom four.
They travel to Huddersfield on Saturday knowing victory could seal their survival with a game to spare if Crewe and Carlisle both fail to take maximum points from their next games. Crewe travel to Stockport tomorrow night while Carlisle are at already relegated Cheltenham on Saturday.
Virgo is desperate to avoid a repeat of the final day cliffhanger he experienced when Albion avoided the drop from the Championship four years ago.
The Seagulls were sweating on results at both Crewe and Gillingham but a 1-1 draw, secured thanks to an equaliser from Virgo, ultimately sealed their survival by a point.
He said: “It is never easy going into the final game relying on results elsewhere so we don’t really want to put ourselves in that position.
“It is horrible playing on the final day hearing celebrations or groans from the crowd as they listen to results on the radio but the good thing is our fate is back in our own hands now.
“I don’t think massive is a big enough word to describe how important it is that we are out of the bottom four.
“You read the papers and watch the TV and it is hard when you see yourselves in the relegation zone with games running out.
“When you are fighting relegation the pressure is intense. You know how much it means to the fans and the club if you go down and it can get too much at times.
“But relegation is not a word we are using now. We have got two massive games coming up and if we can get a result at Huddersfield it might be enough.
“We have got a lot of confidence now and we showed we are up for the fight at Bristol on Tuesday. When you go 1-0 down it is about character and commitment and everyone showed that.
“It was a massive victory but now we have got to make sure we follow it up and get the points we need to stay up.”
