Calvin Andrew scored a second half winner as Albion came from behind to drag themselves clear of the relegation zone.
The Seagulls had fallen behind in the first half through Rickie Lambert's 28th minut goal and were second best for the majority of the first half.
They got on level terms two minutes before the interval when Gary Hart's cross was headed in with the announcer giving it to Lloyd Owusu but it looking suspiciously like an own goal.
Albion were much better in the second half and the winner came in the 52nd minute courtesy of a brilliant piece of play from Hart.
He got clear down the right and whipped over a fine cross which Andrew, who had come on in place of the injured Dean Cox, headed home.
With Northamoton and Yeovil both drawing it means Albion are now two points clear of the drop zone.
