Albion are sweating on the fitness of Tommy Elphick as they try to haul themselves out of the relegation zone at Bristol Rovers tonight.

Boss Russell Slade is hoping the centre half will be available to help combat League One's leading marksman, Rickie Lambert, and Rovers' threat from set pieces, with Andrew Whing already missing from the defence due to suspension.

Elphick suffered a thigh injury in Saturday's 3-1 home win over Oldham. He did not re-appear for the second half and has been under intensive treatment ever since.

"Tommy is 50-50," Slade said. "He is travelling with us and we will see how he is. It's getting better all the time.

"You don't want too many changes. If Tommy wasn't to play that would mean two changes to the back four and you don't really want that at this stage. It has been fairly settled over recent weeks."

Slade's midfield options have been restricted by a groin injury sustained in training yesterday by Jason Jarrett, which rules him out.

"He was getting himself into contention," said Slade. "He came on for 20 minutes on Saturday and did quite well.

"It's going to be difficult. They (Rovers) are very free-scoring and Lambert has scored 27 goals. He is a real threat and he has improved as a player.

"A lot of teams are now watching him from a higher league, so we have to be mindful of him but they are not just a one-man team.

"Their captain, Stuart Campbell, is deadly from set plays and they scored three out of their four goals against Millwall on Saturday from set plays."

Winning their game in hand of Carlisle and Crewe will take Albion out of the bottom four.

A draw will be enough if Northampton, who have a game in hand of the Seagulls, lose at home to play-off chasing Scunthorpe.

Slade said: "A draw would be acceptable but a win would be preferable."
