Lloyd Owusu was the two-goal hero today as Albion moved to within one point of safety.
The Seagulls are still 22nd but a point behind Crewe and Carlisle with a game in hand on both.
Owusu struck once in each half, taking his tally to four in the last four games, as the Seagulls beat Oldham 3-1 on a dramatic afternoon at Withdean.
He started the afternoon as goal maker by getting away on the right and providing a precise cross for Dean Cox to head the 26th-minute opener.
Luck was on Owusu's side 11 minutes later when his header from Gary Hart's cross looked like it might fly wide, only to bounce in off backtracking keeper Mark Crossley.
The Seagulls suffered a very nervous start to the second period and were dragged back on 62 minutes as substitute Lewis Alessandra held off Adam El-Abd before guiding his shot past Michel Kuipers.
Two minutes later, however, poor defending at the other end allowed Owusu to go through and calmly slide a shot past Crossley.
Albion had Andrew Whing sent-off for a second bookable offence late on.
