It may not be the perfect strike quartet, with leading marksmen Nicky Forster and Glenn Murray both sidelined, but Albion’s firepower has received a timely boost for the relegation run-in.

Gary Hart came off the bench to set up Lloyd Owusu’s clincher at Hereford on Tuesday and now Calvin Andrew is back to compete with them and Craig Davies.

Andrew resumed his spell on loan from Crystal Palace yesterday after an unexpectedly swift recovery from injury.

The 22-year-old was due to miss the rest of the season with a double hamstring tear sustained against Luton, his home town and former club, in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Kenilworth Road in February.

“That was the initial thought,” Andrew confirmed after linking up with the Seagulls again for training at Withdean.

“I had a grade two tear in the middle of my hamstring and a smaller one in the bottom.

“It is quite uncommon to have two tears in the same hamstring. It was quite severe but I’ve come through that now and I am happy to be back. It has been a long road for me, seven weeks now.

“I just remember trying to open up to run after a ball and feeling something in my leg and Tommy Fraser running past me saying ‘come on Calvin, we need you’.

“I went to get back up to carry on and the next time I opened up to try to run I just felt it go completely and a really sharp pain.”

Andrew’s plight was matched by Albion’s agonising exit on penalties at Kenilworth Road.

Missing out on a Wembley appearance ended Micky Adams’ reign as manager but not much else has changed while Andrew has been recuperating at Selhurst Park. The Seagulls are still deep in trouble in League One.

“It’s almost the same as when I left,” he said. “We are still down there and we need to have the right mentality to crack on and get some points on the board. We’ve just got to dig in now and help each other out and push on.

“It was a great win at Hereford. They are down there and it is always important to beat the teams around you. It’s another huge game tomorrow, the lads know that.”

Andrew was credited with Albion’s last-gasp winner on his debut against Danny Wilson’s old club Hartlepool at Withdean.

He has been back in full training for ten days and, although not match fit, is sure to be on the bench against Swindon, providing he comes through today’s session.

He can also play out on the left and, along with Hart, will be more than useful back-up to Owusu and Davies, who were rested from training yesterday as a precaution in company with Gary Borrowdale.

Boss Russell Slade said: “It’s good to see him back. I have been monitoring his situation at Palace, because I know the physio and Neil Warnock from my time with them at Sheffield United.

“He played in a 45-minute game this week, so he will be pleased with that because it was quite a nasty hamstring tear he received.

“It gives me another body and a little bit more competition for the two big strikers I have got, together with Harty who came on and made a positive contribution on Tuesday. I think that augurs well.”

Colin Hawkins (calf) is also back in full training but Al Bangura has been laid low by a virus as he recovers from knee trouble and Adam Hinshelwood (calf) has only just started running again.
