Tommy Fraser gave his mum the birthday treat she asked for with a rare goal to keep alive Albion’s League One survival hopes.

Fraser opened the scoring with a spectacular overhead kick early on in last night’s precious 2-1 victory at relegation rivals Hereford.

It was the midfielder’s first League goal since December 2006 and ended a four-game famine for the Seagulls.

Fraser said: “My mum is in Spain and I was on the phone to her. It’s her birthday today (Wednesday) and she said a goal would be nice.

“To tell you the truth I don’t remember a lot about it but I looked up and people were celebrating.

“It’s probably the best goal I have scored out of all three! One was from about four yards, the other two yards.”

Fraser was substituted at MK Dons on Saturday on his comeback from a virus but boss Russell Slade kept faith with him on the left of a midfield diamond.

Slade said: “There were one or two tough decisions, particularly with us changing the shape, and Tommy was one of them. He did not do a great deal on Saturday but he has come good with a vital goal.

“I just hope we don’t have to wait another three years! Maybe he is like a bus and they will all come at once.”

Slade was also delighted with Owusu’s second half clincher after his misses at MK Dons, which leaves Albion five points adrift of safety with a game in hand.

“It was absolutely vital to get that second goal and he took it well,” Slade said. “He’s a very honest boy who will give what he has got and we need players like that.”
