A former Manchester United player has said Danny Welbeck should return to Old Trafford.
Lee Sharpe, who played on the wing for United, believes Welbeck's excellent form for Albion makes him the perfect signing for the January transfer window.
Welbeck has had a standout start to the season, scoring six goals and providing two assists in 12 Premier League matches.
The 34-year-old has previously dismissed speculation linking him to a United comeback, saying: “There’s always that link for me because I have been at Man United, came through there, so it’s always easy to put that link together. But I just focus on what I can control. All the other stuff is pretty irrelevant.”
Sharpe praised Welbeck’s influence at the club, describing him as a "mature and assured player," who is "doing brilliant things" in the league.
Sharpe told Racing Tipster: "Manchester United could look at someone like Danny Welbeck in January.
"He’s working his socks off, creating and scoring goals, and looks like he’s in his prime down there at the Amex Stadium.
"That’s the type of striker who can have a really good effect in the Premier League."
While the focus is on Welbeck, Sharpe also mentioned another former Albion striker, Viktor Gyökeres, who is thriving at Sporting Lisbon.
Gyökeres has netted 24 goals in 20 games this season, garnering interest from top clubs, including Manchester United.
However, Sharpe questioned if Gyökeres is ready for the Premier League's demands, suggesting that Welbeck’s track record could provide a more immediate solution.
Welbeck has reinvented and grown with Brighton, a journey he shared in an exclusive interview with The Argus.
Looking back on his time at the club, Welbeck admitted he didn’t foresee a long stay after joining on a one-year deal in 2020.
He said: "When I came here, I felt like Brighton was the right fit – and it’s proved right.
"Every single season got better and better, and now we’re competing for Europe again, which is a big goal for all of us."
Welbeck remains under contract until 2026.
