Joao Pedro has been hailed as Brazil’s next big thing by a former team-mate.

But Troy Deeney believes Albion will struggle to keep him if they do not reach Europe.

The former Watford and Fluminense man came up with a goal and assist for the second game running as he led Albion to a 2-1 win at Bournemouth.

He has had a stop-start season so far, starting just four Premier League games, but has been instrumental in attacking play.

Deeney played with a youthful Joao Pedro at Vicarage Road and has compared and contrasted him with his compatriot Richarlison.

Now a pundit on TalkSPORT, with whom he has visited the Amex twice already this season, Deeney said: “Richarlison was selfish in his approach.

“If he scored or he got an assist it was a good game, even if we lost 6-1.

“With Joao, he has the confidence to get kicked and not worry about it.

“Give me the ball, don’t worry, I’ll deal with it and take games on at 18 years old.

“You always knew he was special.”

The first game Joao Pedro missed this season was the 0-0 draw with Ipswich.

At half-time, he spotted Deeney in the press box and came up for a handshake and a hug.

Deeney said that moment meant a lot and added: “For Brazil, he is the next one, I really do. I think he will go again.

“Brighton will struggle to keep him if they don’t get into Europe this year.”

Deeney enjoyed Albion’s win at the Vitality Stadium.

He told listeners: “It was a proper game of football.

“None of this sitting back and waiting. They were blood, guts and thunder.

“Everyone was going after it and I think that’s what we need more of.”

Joao Pedro’s early strike was his 24th goal for Albion in all competitions, in 31 starts plus 15 games coming on as sub.
