Carlos Baleba has received more backing after his dismissal at Bournemouth.

The Albion midfielder was shown a second yellow card after a collision with Cherries full-back Milos Kerkez.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler was adamant it was an incorrect decision and argued there should be scope to remove the second booking from the records.

Referee Stuart Attwell’s decision has come under fire.

Now former Premier League referee Jeff Winter has spoken in support of the Seagulls.

Winter said: “The first booking for Baleba was straightforward.

“We’ve talked about these types of fouls before—they are common when a player gets caught out of position or for pace.

“It’s one of those cynical fouls where the commentators will say, ‘He took one for the team’, and you can’t argue with it.

“If there’s any criticism of Baleba, it’s that when you’ve already been cautioned, you need to be very, very careful.

“But the second yellow was harsh. Not every free-kick warrants a caution, and for a second yellow, it has to be more than just a foul.

“It has to be either persistent misconduct—several offences after being booked—or a challenge that’s clear and easy to justify”.

“In this case, you could argue it wasn’t even a foul. If you’re giving the foul, the referee should speak to the player and warn him.

“Say something like, ‘Look, you’ve already been cautioned. calm down’. But for me, it was never a red card.”

“This is where VAR comes into the argument. If the VAR thought it was harsh, they couldn’t intervene because it was a second yellow.

“That’s the rule, but it doesn’t help with consistency.”
