Albion dug deep as a unit at Bournemouth – and had some excellent individual displays.
The latter ranged from defensive pillars to attacking livewires.
While we saw a lot more of the former than the latter, quality in the final third proved decisive for a Seagulls team who continue to impressively out-perform their xG.
Here is how they performed as individuals.
Bart Verbruggen 8.5/10
A thoroughly commanding performance in terms of saves, dealing with crosses and with the ball at his feet in the wet conditions. It was actually a surprise to realise he did NOT save that last-second volley.
Joel Veltman 7/10
Some good, combative defending against a Cherries side who pose a wide threat – and looked to get forward even well into the second half.
Jan Paul van Hecke 8/10
In what felt like an old-fashioned English league battle, he stood strong and produced a series of clearances, blocks and tackles – and held the line just long enough when the hosts had their first-half goal disallowed. Not at his best in terms of passing the ball but it was that type of game.
Igor 7.5/10
Is relishing his run in the side and combines strength with a soft touch on the ball. Was not always unbeatable but was certainly always combative and committed.
Pervis Estupinan 7/10
An early loss of possession did not bode well but, on his return from an arduous trip to South America, he came up with a strong contribution in demanding circumstances.
Carlos Baleba 6/10
No complaints over the first yellow, which came from not the first occasion on which Albion were loose in possession. But his second yellow, as Kerkez slid in, looked harsher the more you saw it back. In general terms, a performance which was decent but not dominant.
Yasin Ayari 7/10
Underlined what his national team coach had said about his injury – that it was nothing of note – with a start and an active midfield performance. There was certainly nothing wrong with the way he won the ball back for the winning goal.
Georginio Rutter 8/10
Showed his skills on the ball on both goals and in a few other glimpses. But also did a diligent job as Kerkez raided forward from left-back.
Joao Pedro 9/10
Absolutely fundamental to the win with a classic No.9’s finish and a trademark No.10’s assist. Given he can also drift wide, he has a range to his play that makes him a big threat.
Kaoru Mitoma 8/10
His first goal since the opening day was a highly intelligent piece of work, both with the run and the finish. Drifted infield at times and also did his work off the ball.
Danny Welbeck 7/10
Helped make things work in at attacking quartet and had under-stated roles in both goals as well as getting through a lot of work in general play on and off the ball.
SUBS - Mats Wieffer 7/10
Sent on to replace Baleba in midfield and did some good work in protecting the lead while looking to get forward.
Simon Adingra 6/10
Replaced the yellow-carded Rutter down the right and, while it looked like he was aware of his defensive responsibility, he did not protect possession late on.
Matt O’Riley, Evan Ferguson N/A
Went on at separate junctures in the late stages to help protect the lead.
