Matt O’Riley was catching up with his Albion boss today after a surprise call to his national squad.

The midfielder was on the bench for Denmark against Serbia after just a brief substitute appearance in the Premier League.

Brief but dramatic as he scored the winner against Manchester City.

That marked his first minutes after ankle surgery and the plan was for him to keep building his fitness at Lancing over this fortnight.

Instead, he joined the Denmark group playing in the UEFA Nations League.

Early signs are that O’Riley can play a major role for the Seagulls after his headline-grabbing move from Celtic.

Head coach Fabian Hurzeler said this morning: “He went to the Danish national team.

“He missed the first game. They called him and he trained there.

“I didn't hear anything negative so I will meet him today and have a talk about his situation and about his condition.

“He's a very important player for us.

“He had a great comeback last game against City.

“We did not buy him for the bench, we bought him to help us on the pitch.

“Not only for his cleverness and understanding of the game but for his ability to score and to defend his own box and the experience he has.”

Adam Webster is again expected to miss out at Bournemouth but Hurzeler said he is “close” after injury.
