Albion’s cup tie with Liverpool will bring back memories of the early days at the Amex.

But not for everyone, it seems.

A visit from the Reds in the League Cup was the first major midweek occasion at the stadium, soon after it opened in 2011.

There were a few big names on view as Kenny Dalglish’s side won 2-1 in the second round.

They included new Albion signing Vicente, brought in from Valencia, who went on as a second-half substitute for his debut.

A foul on the Spanish star by Jamie Carragher allowed Ashley Barnes to bring Albion back into the tie from the penalty spot late on.

But Vicente - who hopes to come back to see a game this season - told The Argus this week: “I really remember very little about that match.

“I remember when we went up there in the same season and they scored six!”

So he won’t recall how Craig Bellamy scored one Liverpool goal, created the other for Dirk Kuyt and hit the crossbar from a free-kick, with Luis Suarez also going close.

Craig Noone, who reminisced ahead of the game about being Steven Gerrard’s former roofer, was a big threat for the hosts and hit the bar in the second half.

Gerrard himself went on as a second-half sub after six months out through injury and was surrounded by the national press pack after the game down beneath the West Stand.

But most of the home excitement was about Vicente.

Albion boss Gus Poyet said: “If we can get him fit for the pace and craziness of the English game, he will be an unbelievable player for us.”

That was to happen all too rarely - as you might remember.

Vicente certainly has memories of his time in England and would love to pay a visit towards the end of this year.

He said: “I’ve got good memories of the team, the fans the city

“They all treated me very well

“My son wants to go to a match at the stadium where I played.”
