An operator has been secured for a new sand sports centre on the seafront.

The new facilities are set to open at the newly developed Hove Beach Park and will be run by Yellowave, which already operates at the Kemp Town end of Brighton beach.

There will be a range of sports including volleyball, tennis, footvolley, five-a-side soccer and sand fitness.

Plans are also being put together for leagues and tournaments there.

The multi-million pound seafront project is due to be fully open next year, although some sections are already open for public use.

The skatepark, pump track and roller rink opened in September, while other facilities in progress include tennis and padel courts and a new building which is home to sports clubs and a café.

Brighton and Hove city councillor Julie Cattell, lead member for major projects, said: “We are really pleased to welcome Yellowave to Hove Beach Park, building on the huge success of the wheeled sports area.

“Together with the tennis and padel courts, the offer of sports and leisure facilities for all ages and abilities has transformed this under-used stretch of the Hove seafront.”

Katie Mintram, director of Yellowave Beach Sports Venue, said: “We are thrilled to be able to bring beach sports to Hove. We will be working with a whole host of clubs, schools and colleges to offer more sand sports in the city to complement the sports on offer at our Madeira Drive site.

“Yellowave Brighton was recently selected as a National Beach Volleyball Development Centre, so we are excited to continue our junior development work at the new Hove Beach Park site.”

Hove Beach Park was named such after Brighton and Hove City Council asked the public to choose from a list of suggestions - including homages to suffragettes and merchants. It was selected after winning 23 per cent of the vote.

The new seafront facilities are part of the Kingsway To The Sea project set up to “regenerate the under-used and run-down facilities and green spaces on the seafront in West Hove”.

The park will run from Hove Lagoon to the King Alfred Leisure Centre.
