Shay Given praised a "brilliant save" from Bart Verbruggen amid a tactical triumph for Fabian Huerzeler.

Given felt the Seagulls pulled off "a brilliant away performance" in the 1-0 win at Newcastle.

Verbruggen stood big and strong to deny Alexander Isak as one of several fine stops at St James’ Park.

Danny Welbeck scored the only goal of the game soon after.

Speaking on BBC TV’s Match Of The Day, former Newcastle goalkeeper Given said: “It’s a brilliant save from Verbruggen but I think he (Isak) has enough time to go around him maybe and slot it into the empty net.”

Given was critical of defender Tino Livramento on the Albion goal.

He said: “Welbeck is too strong and he puts it away.

“That’s in 90 seconds. You could be leading at St James’ Park and you know what the atmosphere is like. And they give it away.”

Given had earlier told BBC Radio 5 Live: "They (Albion) looked as though they set up a wee bit deeper.

"With the pace Newcastle have in the forward areas, I think the manager definitely deserves credit.

"He went to Newcastle and said 'we have to sit a little bit deeper' and in the second half they did that.

"They soaked up any real pressure that Newcastle put on them and had a few chances themselves on the break.

"It was a brilliant away performance from Brighton and give the manager credit, Huerzeler."

Former Newcastle goal machine Alan Shearer said of his old club: “They have been so poor in front of goal today and in other games. That has to change.”
